The REAL Zoo

While Scout was hanging out at Dr. E's office, we went to the real zoo, 'cuz, it was free today. I did donate a dollar at the entrance and got a wrist band, and two bucks at one of the concession stands for a "Year of the Frog" pin. So three bucks for to go to the zoo today, and I think we got gypped.

First off, the Koala is no longer there. He went back to San Diego, I'm guessing for their big "Koalapalooza" thingamabobby. So that was a super let-down, especially when there was a "keeper chat" scheduled for the Koala Crossing at 10am.

Then the Elephants were nowhere to be found. Their entire habitat was empty. Like an Elephant ghost town. It was like a store that has this huge sale-- "Everything on Sale"-- and then hides all the really good stuff up in the storage area. No Elephants, no Koalas.

Bummer.

I did get some pictures of the animals that were on display, and not sleeping.

Here's the Meerkats. This little fellow was fascinated by the reflection in the glass, and tapped it several times to see if it was real.

This guy stood guard on the ground, even though there were two others watching from their posts up high.
The Keeper said that the Meerkats have a member of their clan on the high rocks at all times, and when they see a helicopter or airplane, they "sound the alarm", and all the Meerkats scurry away to safety. She also said that two years ago, the alpha male of the clan died of cancer, and they have yet to determine who the new alpha male is, so the clan size is stable at fourteen, since only the alpha male and alpha female participate in procreation.

The Cheetahs were keeping an eye on things, too.
The Giraffes were bored and were cribbing on the fence posts.

This young Giraffe was grooming his buddy's mane.

Monkeys looking around.

This was an interesting tree. Its bark was green, and it had thorns like a rose bush.

The Lions were out catching some rays.

The male's name is Johnathan.

The Tiger was restless and wandered around his area in a large, oblong circle.
Monkeys hanging out in their cage.

The Mandrill was really, really glad to see everyone (which I edited out of the photo).

Some more monkeys....

This young Orangutan was hanging out in his hammock.
