Scout's vet visit

Today was Scout's three-month checkup, and his year anniversary (or close enough) of his diagnosis. Our oncologist is about to go on maternity leave, and she wanted to see Scout before her last day. We were supposed to have a regular visit, where we get to visit with her and "conversate" about our questions and concerns, but we got a phone call on Friday saying that she had started having contractions, and would only be able to see patients as "drop offs." Her doctor said that she could go to work, but she couldn't leave her desk. So Scout would have to be dropped off, meaning that we would leave him there and pick him up after they had done all of their picking and prodding and poking.

Yeah. I could see this going over real well.

Lead baloons, I'm thinking.

So last night we picked up all the food at 10pm, per doctor's instructions, and not surprisingly, he got hungry about 2am, and started pestering us. It got worse as time went on. By 6am, he was absolutely insane. He wouldn't leave the utility room, where we keep the dog food, and had to be physically removed. He would take turns pestering us, trying to get one of us to feed him. It was even more amusing because lately we have had concerns about his appetite, and have given him extra anti-nausea and/or appetite stimulant on 4 different occasions this month. Today he was absolutely ravished.

We dropped him off, and Dr. E called about 10:15, and she was pleased with his physical exam, and told us that the appetite ups and downs was pretty par for the course, but if it got to where there were more downs than ups, then she would want an ultrasound.

This is his report:

On physical examination he looks great. His weight is increased by 4 ounces to 13.81 pounds. His complete blood count was within normal limits. On his chemistry profile he has persistent elevation in his BUN and creatinine. They are slightly above his last visit but still fairly stable when compared to his lab work overall. Since he has gained weight and appears in good body condition I did go ahead and refill his chlorambucil today as planned. However, should you notice a persistently decreades appetite or more episodes of stomach upset, we may need to consider a repeat abdominal ultrasound.

They called again around noon to tell us that he was ready to be picked up. We went to get him, and the nurse said that he didn't really eat any of the food we left him, but we weren't too surprised, as he normally doesn't want to eat there. We were about a quarter of the way home and realized that they didn't give us his chemo pills, but we decided against turning around, and went home so I could feed Scout and the dogs and the other mama went back to the vet for his meds.

When we got home, Scout was really pissed off. He was growling and hissing at everyone and everything, and didn't want anyone to touch or look at him. Eventually, he calmed down and ate his treat, baby food, and is now sleeping atop a stack of pillows.
