Katy got sick late last week (we're pretty sure it's not from watching the Astros current losing streak), and we've been trying to get things straightened out all week. She has been coughing quite a bit, and we have been using the stronger dosage of her antibiodic. We also started giving her smaller portions of food, and added a fifth meal, so she is getting fed about every two hours. We were giving her more water with her food, so it was kind of soupy, but this morning she had a really hard time with it, so we are going back to the oatmeal-type consistency, and might have to go all the way back to the meatballs.
We like to give her the food with more water, because it seems to help keep her from wanting to drink water from the water bowl. It seems that the drinking water is what she is struggling with the most right now, even though she is not dehydrated, which is a good thing. I guess if we needed to, we could get an IV drip for her, but since there is no dehydration, we don't have to worry about that. We had to do the IV for Piglet, so we have experience with it, but it is just not fun for any of us. If you think it's hard getting a shot, try having to stick one of your animals with one. Not fun.
Katy's had two good nights in a row, but we've worked really hard during the day trying to help her keep things down. She got really mad at me yesterday, because after having her sit for about fifteen minutes after eating, she started coughing a few minutes later, so I made her sit for a full thirty minutes more. When I finally let her go on her way, she jumped up on the sofa and laid down in a huff.
Today is a chemo day for Scout. We think that the chemo is upsetting his stomach a bit more than we previously believed, so now in addition to getting a Zofran on chemo days, he gets one the next day as well. We are also giving him an appetite stimulant every other week to make sure he keeps his weight up. He got one last week, and his weight has held stable through this week. After we gave him his pill late one day last week, he drove us insane wanting food. He knew he was hungry, but for what, he didn't know, so we had five bowls of food sitting out in the kitchen. It was a kitty buffet, and PJ was in heaven, but every three minutes Scout was bugging us to get him some fresh new food. It was pretty funny having him follow us around all evening.
PJ has his annual visit to the vet next Friday morning.
