Max's Day at the Vet
For the last couple of months, Max has been kind of wobbly in his back legs. When we took him in for his checkup last month, the vet did a physical exam, but didn't notice anything significant. Over the past week, the weakness in his back legs seemed to get worse, so we dropped him off this morning to get checked out. When I picked him up this afternoon, I got to see his xrays, which the vet was very proud of. Max's joints are basically perfect, so we don't have to worry about hip or knee replacement. The next thing that will be checked is his potassium bromide levels. The vet told us that he's currently treating a dog that has seizures (like Max) and is taking bromide (like Max), but recently had a lot of weakness in her back legs (like Max). This dog's bromide levels, which had previously been in the normal range and for some reason become too high, causing the weakness in the legs. Now they are lowering the dog's bromide intake, and her leg weakness is starting to go away. Hopefully, this is what is going on with Max. It seems like the most simple (and cheapest) solution. Otherwise, he will be referred to a neurologist. We'll find out by next Monday at the latest what his bromide levels are.
