We had quite a shock today around 2 pm. Max had a seizure. He has never had one before that we know about, so we were pretty flipped out about the whole ordeal. It was one of the scariest things I have ever seen. He was just sitting on the floor, then he fell over and knocked over a TV tray and then fell over on his other side and hit the rocking chair and started shaking. There was nothing we could do to make it stop. He laid there for a few minutes and couldn't move. Katy was so upset that she threw up most of the food we had just fed her an hour before. We took Max to the emergency vet, and they did a toxicology screen and took x-rays, but found nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, by the time we got him there, he was acting like his usual self. The doctor on duty couldn't believe how happy he was, jumping on people and wanting to get petted and being just plain friendly. The doctor said it could just be an isolated event (which apparently happens at times), but if he has another one to bring him back and they will start him on phenobarbitol (not sure of the spelling, and too drained to look it up.). If he doesn't have another one in the next three months, then it probably was just an isolated incident. Katy and Scout were pretty upset by the whole ordeal, but everyone is feeling better now, and Max is enjoying his peanut-butter-flavored water.
Katy has been doing okay. She is not throwing up as much food, but is still not able to rest through the night, so one of us is getting up with the dogs around 2 am daily. Luckily, when I was sofa shopping, I picked out one by how comfortable it is to sleep on.
Scout is doing well. We weighed him yesterday on our scale, and he was 14.5 pounds. He goes back to Dr. E. in the middle of October, which will be his 9 month check-up.
MONDAY UPDATE
Max went for his follow-up at our regular vet today and he said that there really isn't anything to do for the occasional seizure. He said that usually they are over before you can get the animal to the vet, and that we should only take him in if the seizures occur in a series, and then he will have to go on the medicine. They don't want to put him on the medicine, becuase when he goes on, he will have to stay on it for the rest of his life. The only thing our vet saw was that Max's tummy was really pink and that he had some red spots signaling a skin infection. So Max got some antibiodics to take. Otherwise, he is doing fine, and we should just chart his seizures and let them know so they can put it in his records. We are going to record him in his kennel during the day at least during the next few weeks to see if he is having any seizures while we are at work.
