Oh What a Night...

Actually, it was a whole day. After letting us get two really good nights' sleep, Katy got us back all day yesterday. It started soon after the dogs came in from their morning PPP (Pee, Poop, and Patrol) in the backyard. The coughing, poofing out her cheeks, half-way throwing up food and swallowing it again. It seems that I spent most of the day holding her up in a sitting position. She would eat, and at times seemed to be feeling okay (walking around, wagging her tail), but then she would start hacking again. It was almost like she had a hairball stuck in her throat and couldn't get it dislodged, except she's a dog and not a cat. Around 7:30 or 8:00 in the evening, she got really sick. She made a sound like a honking goose that scared the crapola out of me. I didn't know what that sound was until I came back in the living room and the other mama was holding up Katy, who was just coughing and poofing out her cheeks. After things settled down a bit, she kind of wandered around the living room with her tail down. She looked really worn out.

We contemplated taking her to the emergency vet for an anti-nausea injection, but that didn't work so well last time, as the vet gave her an anti-motility, anti-nausea shot, which screwed up the food getting to her stomach for the next several days. Our regular vet was not too happy that the emergency vet did that. Anyway, our regular vet is not open on Wednesdays, so we were really between a rock and a hard place. So we decided to give her a dose of Zofran (our vet said it was ok) and see if it would help her feel better. So I put a Zofran in a pill pocket and gave it to Katy, who ate it readily. I helped her sit up for about ten minutes, but about 10-15 minutes later, she threw up the pill pocket. So we tried again. And about 10 minutes later, the pill pocket came out once more. Third time must be the charm, because she kept it down that time.

About 9:00 pm, Katy started to relax. She laid down a couple of times, and coughed a little, but was definitely feeling better. She even followed me around a little, wagging her tail. I decided to sleep in the living room, because I thought it would be better for her not to be cramped up in her kennel all night after having such a rough evening. I put one of her extra kennel pillows in a corner spot Katy likes to lay in and set up the sofa for sleeping. Katy plopped herself down on her pillow and didn't move for almost two hours! In  fact, all night long, as long as she was on that pillow, she was quiet.
