Katy has been having a rough time, barfing up a storm, especially at night. Overnight on Thursday/Friday, she had a really rough night, and by that, I mean that she had me up most of the night. It started about 1:30 am for about half an hour, then again about 3:30 for another hour. It ended about 5:30, when Katy and Max decided to go on a fast food run. And by that, I mean they wriggled their way past the fence and ran through the house eating any cat food they could find sitting out. About that time, the other mama got up and took over. I went back to bed and slept until about nine.
While I was sleeping, the other mama called the vet and asked if Katy could have a Zofran, which is the hard-core anti-nausea pill that we got for Scout. The reason we asked is that some of the anti-nausea pills are also anti-motility, which means that they are bad for a dog that has motility problems. As it turns out, Zofran is not an anti-motility, and ok for Katy to have.
While talking to the vet tech, we discovered that we were giving Katy the wrong dosage of her regular anti-nausea, the Metoclopramide (Reglan). The directions on our bottle said 1/2 tablet 30 minutes before meals, and/or every 6-8 hours. It was supposed to read 1+1/2 tablets 30 minutes before meals, and/or every 6-8 hours. Well that explains a lot, especially why the Metoclopramide hasn't seemed to be working as of late.
In any case, we gave Katy a dose of the Zofran to knock out the nausea, which it did, and then before her evening meals, we started up with the (correct dosage of) Metoclopramide. We also started her up again on the antibiodics, since she's been throwing up so much lately, we figured there had to be some aspiration in there. She slept through the night last night with only one coughing episode, and had a pretty good day today. She's been feeling better and wanting to wrestle with Max and play with him.
