We took Scout to the vet today for a check-up. I noticed he looked a little skinny this weekend, and we decided to go ahead and take him in, since we skipped his annual visit this year because of all the visits we made with Katy, we really didn't have the $$ to spend, and since he was feeling ok, we just skipped it.
After grumping at us all the way to the vet's office, Scout actually behaved himself pretty good. They weighed him when we got there, and he was 12 pounds, which is down about a pound and a half. They took him in the back to get the blood samples, and he was doing so well, they went ahead and gave him his shots while he was back there. He is getting the full range of blood work to make sure we have a good diagnosis.
We're not sure if Scout is eating much of the dry food we have for the cats, but figure it's not a toothache, since he eats dry treats and kitty "greenies" fine. He still eats his wet food and treats, so it's not his appetite that is suffering. The vet said to start giving him a can of wet food a day to supplement the dry. It's possible that the only thing wrong is that he simply doesn't want to eat the dry food any more. I hope that's the case. He said that it could be a hyper-thyroid condition, but we won't know until we get the results from the bloodwork. He also said that the vet commmunity is now saying that wet food is better for cats than dry food, because cats really don't drink a lot of water, and so they need the moisture from the wet food to help keep them from getting urinary tract infections and kidney and liver disease. So, when we got home, Scout got his usual wet food for visiting the vet without eating anyone, but I made sure he ate the whole can's worth. PJ snuck in there for a few bites, but Scout ate a good 95 percent. I'm also softening up some of the dry food to make wet food, and maybe he will eat it that way.
