Houdini Dog

To fully appreciate what happened today, I have to tell you a story that took place on December 29th.

We had spent the day with some family that had been sick on Christmas and didn’t celebrate with the family. So we went to visit and go out to lunch. Since we were going to be gone a good portion of the day, we made a big kennel out of the fence and put both dogs in it. We’ve done this many times before and had no problems whatsoever. So we had no reason to believe there would be any problems this time around. Boy, were we ever wrong.

When we got home five hours later, there was a brown bad dog running around the house. We were not alarmed at first, but then we walked back into the bedroom. Katy had thrown up all over the bedroom. When she ran out of food to throw up, she found something to eat in the litter pan. Apparently, cat poop is a delicacy for dogs. However, when they throw it up, it does not smell like a delicacy. It smells like the Livestock Show. The floor looked like napalm with poop craters every eighteen inches. Did I mention the smell? We got it all wiped up and sprayed most of the floor with pet odor eraser spray and then later used the Bissell carpet cleaner. Since then, Katy’s escaped one other time (I’ve tried to remember to clean the litter pan in the morning instead of the evening, so there is minimal poop to find), throwing up just the cat food that she ate. We’ve now started to close and fasten the fence very tightly.

Which brings us to today. As of late, Katy hasn’t wanted to go into her own individual kennel; she’s wanted to share the larger kennel with Max. That’s okay, as long as she doesn’t get out. Sometime this morning, she got out. We’re not sure how it happened, because we locked up the kennel as tight as usual. The only thing we can figure is that she somehow jumped over the top. Anywho, Katy threw up all over the place. Luckily, I had cleaned out the litter pan this morning, otherwise, the throw up would have been poo. That didn’t stop her from trying, because there is evidenceof someone digging in the litter, looking for the poopies. So this afternoon, she spent in her own kennel, with a door and a roof, so she couldn’t get out for any extra-curricular activities. When I got her out of her kennel, however, she was wheezing and puffing out her cheeks again, so she was super-nauseated as a result of her little excursion this morning. I gave her an anti-nausea and antacid about 4:15, and a Cisapride about 5:15. We went for a short walk in between to see if that would help any. She has been drinking water, and threw up a little bit of that, but is not interested in food at all. As of 5:30, she is taking a nap, so maybe she is feeling a little bit better, and we can try to feed her later on this evening.
