It's 1 a.m., it must be time to go potty

At 1 a.m. on Sunday morning, Max barked once. Thinking he was just having a bad dream, I ignored it and dozed off. Soon, Max barked again. Ok, now something was wrong, since he rarely barks when he is in his kennel, and usually it is because he has to go potty. I got up and let him out of his kennel. He dashed out to the back door, then darted back into his kennel; he had forgotten to take his stuffie out of his kennel.

When Max was a puppy, we had stuffies in his kennel. These are the only stuffies he won't chew up. He will destroy any stuffie in the living room, just not in his kennel. When he leaves his kennel, he rescues one of the stuffies from the kennel and drops it on the floor by the door. If there is not a stuffie in his kennel, he won't leave it. (I know, he's weird.) So, we keep 2-3 stuffies in his kennel to make sure he has one to rescue every morning.

In his state of emergency, he stepped out of his kennel without his trusty stuffie. He ran back to get one and dropped it at the door. I looked down to make sure that he didn't take the stuffie out in the back yard, as Katy doesn't have any respect for stuffies, and would make short work of his toy. Max whimpered and started doing the pee-pee dance. I had never seen a dog do that before.

I let him out into the yard, and he walked very quicky. You know how when you need to go to the bathroom really badly, but don't run because you're afraid you won't be able to hold it if you run, so you just walk really, really, fast? That's what Max did in the back yard while he sniffed around finding his potty spot. About five minutes later, he was done with his business and ready to come back to bed.

Last night, when we sent them from the living room to run around to the back door, we reminded Max to go to the potty before going to bed!
